This year over 182,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. A new case will be diagnosed every 3 minutes and every thirteen minutes, the disease will claim another life. The weekend of July 12, 2002, I’ll be participating in a very special and powerful event in the fight against breast cancer. It’s called the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day.

I’ll walk 60 miles from San Jose to San Francisco with more than 3,000 other people to raise money for breast cancer. The net proceeds from the event will support non-profit breast health programs in every region of the country, and medical research on breast cancer. The Avon Products Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, will award grants to these types of organizations.

The reason I am walking is that I am the daughter and niece of breast cancer survivors. As a woman I want to do my part to inform others about breast cancer, early detection and treatment. The odds are that you, too, know someone – an acquaintance, a friend, a family member – who has been touched by cancer.
